Santa Cruz, Soledad vineyards spotlighted by California State Fair

In Sacramento on Tuesday, the California State Fair announced winners from its prestigious Commercial Wine Competition and two Central Coast vineyards were highlighted.

Storrs Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains was awarded “Best of Greater Bay White” for its 2012 Chardonnay, while Hahn Winery in Soledad won “Best of North-Central Coast Red” for its 2012 Meritage.

The two most prestigious awards, “Best of Show Red” and “Best of Show White,” went to a cabernet sauvignon made by Sterling Vineyards in Napa Valley and a Coquille Blanc made by Carol Shelton Wines in Santa Rosa, respectively.

In Paso Robles, J. Lohr Estates was awarded “Best Pinot Noir” for its 2012 Falcon’s Perch Pinot Noir, Peachy Canyon Winery’s Zinfandel was declared “Best Of South-Central Coast Red,” and Carol Shelton Wines won “Best Of South-Central Coast White” with its Coquille Blanc.

The first State Fair Wine Competition was held in 1855, making it one of the oldest wine events in the country.
